to reduce the deficit, 63% said no. 86% of the ads run for obama were personal attacks on romney. he won a stunning mandate to not be romney. he did not run on the basis he was going to do massive new spending and the kind of tax increases, $1.6 trillion that he's now talking about. and at the same time that obama was elected president, the republican house, which had twice voted for a real budget -- remember, the president's budget he claims he has a mandate for was put up before the house and the democrats all voted against it. in the senate, the democrats didn't want to have anything to do with it. it's a little hard to argue, he had a mandate for something the rest of his party ran away from. >> well -- >> did not run ads on those issues. >> and, of course, it was a bit more complicated than that. but to your point about the exit polls, it's true, most people said that they didn't want tax increases to solve the deficit. what they said -- the majority, was they wanted both balanced. they wanted cuts and tax increases. which is what both john boehner and the president -- in very strid

the gunman had a rifle. we will report later. president obama, i'm going to switch gears now. he has hired 101 new government employees every day since i took office in 2009. that comes to 143,000 over paid workers. let's talk to chris edwards director of tax and policy at the kato institute. but besides this number 143,000 workers, when everybody has basketball getting laid off. average civilian pay, average federal workday, $134,000. that is $32,000 more than the average pay. that is astonishing. >> if you look at total compensation, the average worker does $124,000 a year versus $68,000 a year. the benefits are amazing. they get a 401(k) styled pension and they get high job security. they are laid off one quarter of the rate that high workers are. we don't want to draw the best and most skilled workers in washington. >> it is interesting to me, people seem to know this. 67% of us think that the people in the private sector work harder than those in the public sector. the federal workforce has more machine money. we are supposed to be having budget cuts. why isn't anyone looking for it.

and the obama administration, the nation's jobless rate fell to 7.7% in november as employers added 146,000 new jobs. the jobless rate hasn't been this low during the entire obama administration, but that's only part of the story. a closer look also shows a big reason behind today's drop in the unemployment rate is that 350,000 people dropped out of the work force in november. they're discouraged, many of them are, that they simply quit and they're trying to find work. christine romans joins us from new york. we saw the unexpected drop in the unemployment rate, but christine, take us a little behind the numbers that make up the headlines. >> 7.7% is that unemployment rate, the lowest since december, 2008, from before the president took office. 146,000 jobs created, twice what economists have been expecting. they really didn't see the pull back because of hiring being depressed because of hurricane sandy. maybe you'll see some of that in the next month, but this was a strong report on its surface. digging in the numbers. look at the right side on that graphic, 14.4% underemployment. the percenta

telling cnn to basically revise their revenue target. p president obama originally proposed $1.6 trillion in new revenue. he wants to raise the tax rates on the wealthiest americans. now we're being told that he's revised that number down to $1.4 trillion. that's obviously a difference of $200 billion. a democratic aide also telling cnn, i'll read the quote, that offer was coupled with a serious spending cut number with real entitlement reform. so that's from the white house side. on the counterproposal from the republicans, we don't have a lot of details on that, but from boehner's office, republicans are basically awaiting spending cut specifics from the white house. meanwhile, as this goes on, you can imagine that lawmakers here in washington are still sniping as you mentioned publicly. take a listen at the latest from john boehner. >> if the president doesn't agree with our approach, he's got an obligation to put forward a plan that can pass both chambers of the congress. because right now, the american people have to be scratching their heads and wondering when is the president going
